Security beefed up at police stations

Shawdesh Desk:

Police have been put on high alert across the country following the recent violence unleashed by activists of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh in different districts, including Brahmanbaria, Sylhet and Chattogram.

As part of the move, sophisticated arms, including machine guns, have been installed in different police stations in Sylhet, Brahmanbaria and Narayanganj.

A total of 27 police establishments have been brought under additional security measures as of Friday.

Policemen armed with light machine guns (LMG) have been deployed in police stations in the three districts.

Additional policemen have also been sent to each of the nine police stations of Brahmanbaria — Sadar Model, Ashuganj, Sarail, Bancharampur, Akhaura, Kasba, Nasirnagar, Nabinagar and Bijoynagar.

Besides, security has been tightened in different police outposts and investigation centres, including No. 1 Police Outpost, No. 2 Police Outpost, Islampur and Dhorkhar Police Outpost and Chatolpar and Auliabazar Investigation Centres.

Trained police members have been deployed in fertiliser factory, PDB, Toll Plaza, Shibpur, Cholimganj and Chompoknagar Police Camp.

Besides, four security check-posts with light machine guns have been set up at the Police Lines and the office of the Superintend of Police.

Earlier on Thursday, Sylhet district police took steps to beef up security in 11 police stations of the district.

Security posts have been set up at six police stations and six outposts of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP). Policemen armed with light machine guns have been deployed there.

Security posts have been set up with sandbags at police stations and outposts under the SMP.

According to SMP sources, the number of police members at the police stations and outposts has also been increased. Up to 50 additional police personnel joined each of the police stations.

Considering the risk, security posts have also been seen set up on the roofs and in the open space in front of some police stations.

An SMP official said the Police Headquarters instructed them to increase monitoring and beef up security following the recent incidents of violence and steps were taken in line with the instructions.

Instructions were given to the police stations under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to step up vigilance and strengthen security measures.

Besides, security posts have been set up at police stations in Hathazari of Chattogram and Rupganj of Narayanganj.

Hefazat men unleashed violence in different parts of the country on March 26-28.
